Paso Fino

A friend of mine told me about a horse show that was going on Sunday at Tropical Park, and I decided to check it out. Most of the horses were Paso Fino’s, which translates into Fancy Step. The show was interesting, but I found a bit difficult to photograph.

During these competitions the horses are performing a series of gaits, which look like dance steps. These steps involve fancy footwork where the horses feet are lifted up high. After going around the dirt area, they go through a walkway where you can hear their steps. I believe they are judged in how in unison their steps are.

I found it difficult at first to capture these steps because the rapid foot falls look more like walking in the photos. So, I decided to use composition to help tell the story. I’m proud of myself for sticking around and figuring it out. As you can see I became pretty obsessed with feet. I know these aren’t the traditional horse photos, but I’m actually proud of that.

Enjoy!

Cheers!
